hi i’m aaron, i’m a 12â-year starbucks partner, and today we’re answering some common questions about how we roast our coffee. why does dark roasted coffee taste burnt? dark roasted coffee has a roast flavor and that roast flavor can be confused as being burnt. what is starbucks roast philosophy? we love roasting to a darker end of the spectrum.
light roast coffee has more caffeine, we’re looking to take each bean and make it its peak flavor expression. we look at what is going to bring out the flavor that we love in it, and that’s what we roast to. why did starbucks begin roasting coffees in the lighter end of the spectrum? we figured with our 45 plus years of experience roasting coffee, we could do light roast too. and we did, and we did it really well.
we roasted our blonde lineup which was veranda and willow. is it true that lighter roasted coffees have more caffeine? the short answer, yes. the long answer is that that amount of caffeine is probably not going to affect you like you think it might. what are some of the common characteristics of different roast profiles?
well if we look at blonde you’re generally going to have more acidity, you’re going to have a lighter body. and as we move up into medium you’re going to start to build that body into the coffee through the roast. and then when we get into dark roast, you have a real great dark roast flavor, you have more and more body up to a point and less acidity. thanks for watching. if you have more questions please visit us at 1912pike.com or on social @starbucks.
